Dame Christine Ryan, Chair of Ofsted’s Board, has announced she will step down next year. The Department for Education will soon begin the process of appointing her successor, with Ryan remaining in post to ensure a smooth transition.
Leadership Through Change
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson praised Ryan for her leadership during a challenging period, including the demands of the pandemic.
“Christine has led the Ofsted board as chair during a period of significant challenges,” Phillipson said. “Over the past four years, she has overseen critical initiatives, including board effectiveness reviews, a substantial renewal of board membership, the successful transition to a new Chief Inspector, and Ofsted’s Big Listen, the largest public consultation in its history.”
Preparing for Governance Reforms
Under Ryan’s leadership, the board will continue work on strengthening Ofsted’s governance framework to enhance accountability and oversight. This will provide a strong foundation for the new Chair to build upon and drive long-term reforms.
“These governance reforms will ensure the board is well-equipped to provide stronger oversight and support improved service delivery,” Ofsted said in a statement.
Reflecting on Her Tenure
Ryan described her role as a privilege, acknowledging both the challenges and achievements of her time as Chair.
“The work Ofsted does is vital in ensuring children and young people receive the education and care they deserve,” she said. “As I prepare to hand over to a new chair, I will leave with pride in my association with Ofsted and deep gratitude for its dedicated staff.”
Ryan, who previously served as Chief Inspector and Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Inspectorate, will leave behind a legacy of resilience and reform.
